Mazda3/Mazda3 MPS BRAKE DISC INSPECTION

Warning
•  Do not use the vehicle-equipped jack to jack up the vehicle for brake disc inspection. The jack may slip during servicing and cause an accident. Always use a lift or a garage jack to jack up the vehicle and use a rigid rack when performing brake disc inspection.
Caution
•  Do not operate the brake pedal with the caliper removed. The caliper may be damaged if it the brake pedal is operated with the caliper removed.
•  Do not operate the parking brake pedal with the parking brake cable disconnected. The parking brake cable may be damaged if the parking brake pedal is operated with the parking brake cable disconnected.

Required tools

•  Micrometer
•  Torque wrench
•  Handle
•  Hexagon-bit socket (7 mm)
•  Pliers
•  Socket (21 mm)
•  Flathead screwdriver

Front Brake Disc Inspection [Mazda3]

1.  Remove the front tire.

2.  Detach the clip from the shock absorber and disconnect the brake hose.

3.  Remove the retaining clip and the caps.

4.  Remove the caliper installation bolts and remove the caliper from the mounting support.

5.  Hang the removed caliper in a place out of the way using a cable.

6.  Remove the disc pad (outer side) from the mounting support.

7.  Clean the brake disc surface where it contacts the pad using brake cleaner.

8.  Measure the thickness of the brake disc using a micrometer.

•  If the brake disc thickness is the usable minimum or less, the brake disc has to be replaced with a new one. Consult a Mazda Dealer for replacement.

Standard brake disc thickness (New part)
25 mm {0.98 in}

9.  Install the disc pad (outer side) to the mounting support.

10.  Install the caliper to the mounting support with the brake hose not twisted, and tighten the caliper installation bolts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
25—30 N·m {2.6—3.0 kgf·m, 19—22 ft·lbf}

11.  Install the caps.

12.  Install the retaining clip using the following procedure.

(1)  Temporarily attach the retaining clip to the caliper and the mounting support as shown in the figure.

(2)  While holding the retaining clip so that part A does not come out from the caliper, install part B to the mounting support.

(3)  Verify that the retaining clip is securely installed to the caliper and the mounting support.

13.  Install the brake hose to the shock absorber using a clip.

14.  Install the front tire and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
88—118 N·m {9.0—12 kgf·m, 65—87 ft·lbf}

15.  After installation, pump the brake pedal a few times and verify that the brakes do not drag.


Front Brake Disc Inspection [Mazda3 MPS]

1.  Remove the front tire.

2.  Move the retaining clip in the direction shown by the arrow using a flathead screwdriver and remove it from the caliper.

Warning
•  When removing the retaining clip, hold back the clip using the hand and thumb so that it does not fly off and cause possible injury.

3.  Detach the clip from the shock absorber and disconnect the brake hose.

4.  Remove the caps.

5.  Remove the caliper installation bolts and remove the caliper from the mounting support.

6.  Hang the removed caliper in a place out of the way using a cable.

7.  Clean the brake disc surface where it contacts the pad using brake cleaner.

8.  Measure the thickness of the brake disc using a micrometer.

•  If the brake disc thickness is the usable minimum or less, the brake disc has to be replaced with a new one. Consult a Mazda Dealer for replacement.

11.  Install the retaining clip using the following procedure.

(1)  Temporarily attach the retaining clip to the caliper and the mounting support as shown in the figure.

(2)  While holding the retaining clip so that part A does not come out of the caliper, install parts B and C to the mounting support.

•  Never use a tool when installing the retaining clip as it could cause injury if excessive force is applied while doing the work.
(3)   Verify that the retaining clip is securely installed to the caliper and the mounting support.

12.  Install the brake hose to the shock absorber using a clip.

13.  Install the front tire and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
88—118 N·m {9.0—12 kgf·m, 65—87 ft·lbf}

14.  After installation, pump the brake pedal a few times and verify that the brakes do not drag.


Rear Brake Disc Inspection

1.  Remove the rear tire.

2.  Remove the parking brake cable from the caliper.

3.  Detach the brake hose clip from the rear trailing link.

4.  Remove the retaining clip and the caps.

5.  Remove the caliper installation bolts and remove the caliper from the mounting support.

6.  Hang the removed caliper in a place out of the way using a cable.

7.  Remove the disc pad from the mounting support.

8.  Clean the brake disc surface where it contacts the pad using brake cleaner.

9.  Measure the thickness of the brake disc using a micrometer.

•  If the brake disc thickness is the usable minimum or less, the brake disc has to be replaced with a new one. Consult a Mazda Dealer for replacement.

10.  Install the disc pad to the mounting support.

11.  Install the caliper to the mounting support with the brake hose not twisted, and tighten the caliper installation bolts to the specified torque.

25—30 {2.6—3.0 kgf·m, 19—22 ft·lbf}

12.  Install the caps.

13.  Install the retaining clip using the following procedure.

(1)  Temporarily attach the retaining clip to the caliper and the mounting support as shown in the figure.

(2)  While holding the retaining clip so that part A does not come out from the caliper, install part B to the mounting support.

(3)   Verify that the retaining clip is securely installed to the caliper and the mounting support.

14.  Install the brake hose clip to the rear trailing link.

15.  Install the parking brake cable to the caliper.

16.  Install the rear tire and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.

Tightening torque
88—118 N·m {9.0—12 kgf·m, 65—87 ft·lbf}

17.  After installation, pump the brake pedal a few times and inspect the following:

•  Parking brake pedal stroke
•  Brake drag
