Outline

•  The drive selection system switches the vehicle’s drive mode.
•  The system is useful in driving situations where high vehicle response to accelerator pedal operation is required such as when merging onto an expressway or accelerating to pass other vehicles.

Function

•  The standard and sport modes are available in the drive selection system and they can be switched by operating the drive selection switch.
Standard mode
―  This mode is suitable for normal driving or gentle acceleration.
Sport mode
―  This mode enhances the vehicle response to accelerator operation compared to the standard mode.
•  When the mode is changed to the sport mode, engine and transaxle controls are changed as follows to enhance the vehicle response.
Engine control
―  Required engine torque relative to accelerator operation is increased to enhance the vehicle response.
Transaxle control
―  Lower gear is selected to eliminate time wasted due to shift change, enhancing the vehicle response.

Operation

When sport mode is selected

1.  When the sport mode is selected (1) using the drive selection switch, the instrument cluster sends (2) a drive selection signal to the TCM and the PCM via CAN communication. When the PCM receives the drive selection signal, it sends (3) a select mode indicator light illumination request signal to the instrument cluster and displays the select mode indicator light illumination (4).

2.  When the TCM receives the drive selection signal, it changes (5) the shift point.

3.  When the PCM receives the drive selection signal, it switches (6) the controls such as the throttle valve opening angle relative to the accelerator opening angle.

Drive selection switch inhibition conditions

•  If any of the following conditions is met, the mode is not switched even if the drive selection switch is operated.
―  During ABS/DSC/TCS control
―  During sudden maneuvering

1.  When the drive selection operation is performed (1), the instrument cluster sends (2) a drive selection signal to the PCM via CAN communication.

2.  If the drive selection switch is operated with a drive selection switching inhibition condition met, the PCM sends (3) a select mode indicator light flash request signal to the instrument cluster.

3.  The instrument cluster flashes (4) the select mode indication to notify the driver that drive selection is currently inhibited.

Drive selection cancel conditions

•  If any of the following conditions is met while in sport mode, the sport mode is canceled.
―  The ignition is switched off.
―  Cruise control or MRCC is operating.
―  A PCM control-related part is malfunctioning.
