OIL FILTER JOINT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5, MZR 1.6]

Warning

•  Hot engines and engine oil can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until it and the engine oil have cooled.

•  A vehicle that is lifted but not securely supported on safety stands is dangerous. It can slip or fall, causing death or serious injury. Never work around or under a lifted vehicle if it is not securely supported on safety stands.

•  Continuous exposure to USED engine oil has caused skin cancer in laboratory mice. Protect your skin by washing with soap and water immediately after working with engine oil.

1.  Disconnect the negative battery cable. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5, MZR 1.6].)

2.  Drain the engine coolant. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT [MZR 1.5, MZR 1.6].)

3.  Remove the oil filter. (See OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT [MZR 1.5, MZR 1.6].)

4.  Remove the oil cooler. (See OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5, MZR 1.6].)

5.  Remove the oil filter joint using the following procedure:

(1)  Install two appropriate nuts (M20 x 1.5) to the oil filter joint.

(2)  Using a wrench, apply force in the direction of the arrow shown in the figure and lock the nuts.

(3)  Using a wrench, apply force in the loosening direction for the inside nuts and remove the oil filter joint.

6.  Install the oil filter joint using the following procedure:

•  Because a short oil filter joint is attached to a new short engine or partial engine, for vehicles with the oil cooler, replace it with a long oil filter joint.

Full length of oil filter joint

With oil cooler: 82.5—83.5 mm {3.25—3.28 in}

Without oil cooler: 36.5—37.5 mm {1.44—1.47 in}

Oil filter joint projection

With oil cooler: 63.5—68.0 mm {2.51—2.67 in}

Without oil cooler: 15.5—20.0 mm {0.611—0.787 in}

(1)  Temporarily tighten the oil filter joint.

(2)  Install two appropriate nuts (M20 x 1.5) to the oil filter joint.

(3)  Using a wrench, apply force in the directions of the arrows shown in the figure and lock the nuts.

(4)  Using a wrench, apply force in the tightening direction to the outside nut and install the oil filter joint. Verify the projection of the installed oil filter joint.

Tightening torque

30—40 N·m {3.1—4.0 kgf·m, 23—29 ft·lbf}

With oil cooler: 63.5—68.0 mm {2.51—2.67 in}

Without oil cooler: 15.5—20.0 mm {0.611—0.787 in}

(5)  Remove the 2 nuts installed in Step 2 of the procedure.

7.  Install in the reverse order of removal.
