AUTO WIPER SYSTEM
id091900000900
Outline
• The auto wiper system detects rainfall on the windshield glass and automatically operates the windshield wipers intermittently or at low/high speed and stops.
Function
• When the ignition is switched ON and the wiper and washer switch is in the AUTO position, the rain sensor sends a windshield wiper control signal to the BCM according to the amount of rainfall contacting the windshield.
-
― Intermittent operation control
-
• When the rain sensor detects an amount of rainfall, the windshield wipers are operated 1 time at low speed. Also, the front windshield wiper intermittent operation is switched between 5 levels depending on the amount of rainfall detected.
-
― Continuous low speed operation control
-
• When the rain sensor detects an amount of rainfall greater than the amount required for intermittent operation, the windshield wipers are operated continuously at low speed.
-
― High speed operation control
-
• When the vehicle speed is 4 km/h (2 mph) or more and the rain sensor detects an amount of rainfall greater than the amount required for continuous low speed operation control, the windshield wipers are operated at high speed two times. Afterwards, if the rain sensor detects the necessary amount of rainfall for high speed operation, the windshield wipers are operated continuously at high speed. When the vehicle speed is 4 km/h (2 mph) or less and the rain sensor detects an amount of rainfall greater than the amount required for continuous low speed operation, the windshield wipers are controlled continuously at low speed.
• If the auto wipers are operated when a gentle rain starts at night, it may cause dazzle on the windshield from the reflection of light such as from headlight beams, resulting in a poor visibility. To prevent this, if the auto light sensor detects an illumination level required for turning on the TNS, the rain sensor determines that the vehicle is traveling at night, and raises the rain sensor sensitivity, to operate the windshield wipers earlier than during the normal timing (day time).
On-board diagnostic function
-
• If a malfunction occurs in the auto wiper control-related switches, sensors, and circuits, the BCM detects DTCs. Refer to the diagnostic system (BCM) DTC list (BCM) in the Workshop Manual.

Operation
-
Warning
-
• The windshield wipers could operate automatically if servicing such as vehicle washing is performed with the ignition switched ON and the wiper and washer switch in the AUTO position. If hands or fingers are caught, it may cause injury or wiper system malfunction. Always switch the ignition OFF (LOCK) or turn the wiper and washer switch to the OFF position before servicing.
Intermittent operation/low speed operation
1. The rain sensor installed on the windshield detects the rainfall amount when the ignition is switched ON and the wiper and washer switch is turned to the AUTO position.
2. The rain sensor determines the operation interval of the windshield wipers based on the detected rainfall amount, and sends a windshield wiper low speed operation signal to the BCM.
3. When the BCM receives a windshield wiper low speed operation signal, it runs base current to transistor A and the transistor turns on.
4. When transistor A turns on, the windshield wipers low relay turns on, current flows to the windshield wiper motor, and the windshield wipers operate intermittently or continuously at low speed.
High speed operation
1. The rain sensor installed on the windshield detects the rainfall amount when the ignition is switched ON and the wiper and washer switch is turned to the AUTO position.
2. The rain sensor sends a windshield wiper high speed operation signal to the BCM based on the detected amount of rainfall.
3. When the BCM receives a windshield wiper high speed operation signal, it runs base current to transistor A, B and the transistor turns on.
4. When transistor A and B turns on, the windshield wipers low relay and windshield wiper high relay turns on, current flows to the windshield wiper motor, and the windshield wipers operate intermittently or continuously at high speed.
