POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT

Purpose

•  The power steering malfunction indicator light warns the driver that there is a malfunction with the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Function

•  The instrument cluster turns on or flashes the electric power steering warning light based on the system malfunction indication request signal sent from the EPS CM via CAN communication.
Note
•  If there is an error in the internal circuit of the resolver sensor, the electric power steering warning light flashes to alert the driver that the steering assist power has weakened. (See ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) CONTROL MODULE.)

Construction

•  The power steering malfunction indicator light is built into the instrument cluster.

Operation


EPS system malfunction detection

1.  The instrument cluster receives (1) the system malfunction indication request signal from the EPS CM.

2.  The instrument cluster turns the transistor on (2) based on the system malfunction indication request signal.

3.  When the transistor turns on, the electric power steering warning light turns on (3).


Resolver sensor open circuit malfunction (resolver sensor backup control)

1.  The instrument cluster receives (1) the system conditions display request signal from the EPS CM via CAN communication.

2.  The instrument cluster turns the transistor on (2) intermittently based on the system condition display request signal.

3.  When the transistor turns on intermittently, the electric power steering warning light flashes (3).

Note
•  If the EPS system and CAN lines are normal, it turns on when the ignition is switched ON (engine off), and it turns off after the engine is started.
•  If there is an open-circuit malfunction in the resolver sensor, the electric power steering warning light flashes to alert the driver that the steering assist power has weakened.
―  If the internal temperature of the EPS system exceeds the specified value, the flashing interval of the electric power steering warning light is shortened to alert the driver.
―  If the internal temperature of the EPS system increases further, the electric power steering warning light switches from flashing to illumination.
―  A warning message in the center display is displayed with the power steering malfunction indicator light turned on or flashed. For the message content and verification method, refer to the [CENTER DISPLAY]. (See CENTER DISPLAY [WITH CENTER DISPLAY].)
