RADAR SENSOR [MAZDA RADAR CRUISE CONTROL (MRCC) SYSTEM]

id0120g0000500

Purpose

•  The radar sensor detects the distance to the vehicle ahead.

Function

•  The radar sensor emits millimeter waves* from the front to the vehicle ahead, and a vehicle or obstruction is detected from the reflected waves.
*  :These radio waves, at a frequency of 30—300 GHz and wavelength of 1—10 mm {0.04—0.39 in}, possess a property in which the affect of rain and soiling is comparatively small and the reception of other radio waves is insusceptible.
Note
•  Under the following conditions, the radar sensor may not be able to detect vehicles ahead or obstructions correctly and each system may not operate normally.
―  The rear surface of a vehicle ahead does not reflect radio waves effectively, such as an unloaded trailer or an automobile with a loading platform covered by a soft top, vehicles with a hard plastic tailgate, and round-shaped vehicles.
―  Vehicles ahead with low vehicle height and thus less area for reflecting radio waves.
―  Visibility is reduced due to a vehicle ahead casting off water, snow, or sand from its tires and onto your windshield.
―  The luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects or the rear passenger seats are occupied.
―  Ice, snow, or soiling is on the front surface of the front emblem.
―  During inclement weather such as rain, snow, or sand storms.
―  When driving near facilities or objects emitting strong radio waves.
•  Under the following conditions, the radar sensor may not be able to detect vehicles ahead or obstructions.
―  The beginning and end of a curve.
―  Roads with continuous curves.
―  Narrow lane roads due to road construction or lane closures.
―  The vehicle ahead enters the radar sensor's blind spot.
―  The vehicle ahead is running abnormally due to accident or vehicle damage.
―  Roads with repeated up and down slopes.
―  Driving on poor roads or unpaved roads.
―  The distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead is extremely short.
―  A vehicle suddenly comes close such as by cutting into the lane.
•  If the battery power is weak, the system may not operate correctly.

Construction

•  The radar sensor is installed on the interior side of the radiator grille.

Operation

•  Millimeter waves are emitted at an angle of 14 ° to the left and right from the center (total 28 °) and they can detect obstructions up to approx. 200 m {656 ft} from the front of the vehicle.

•  The radar sensor uses a specialized CAN and performs transmission with the vehicle control module (V/C-module).

Fail-safe

•  If the following malfunctions are detected, the radar sensor stops detecting the forward movement of the vehicle.
―  Radar sensor internal circuit malfunction
―  Communication error between radar sensor and vehicle control module (V/C-module)
―  Radar sensor is outside of operation range (ignition power supply, internal temperature)
