DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

Warning
•  Handling the air bag module improperly can accidentally deploy the air bag module, which may seriously injure you. Read the air bag system service warnings and cautions before handling the air bag module. (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS.) (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE CAUTIONS.)
Note
•  The driver-side air bag module engages with the pins of the driver-side air bag module and the snap springs of the steering wheel.

Removal

Note
•  When removing the driver-side air bag module, it is necessary to rotate the steering wheel. If the ignition has been switched OFF (LOCK) with the driver's door closed, the steering wheel will be locked. Perform the procedure from Steps 1-3 so that the steering wheel will not be locked.

1.  Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).

2.  Open the driver's door.

3.  Switch the ignition off.

4.  Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more. 5.  Verify the service hole on the back side of the steering wheel shown in the figure.

6.  Insert the tool from the service hole.

7.  Press the snap springs to disengage them from the pins using the inserted tool.

Caution
•  Hold the driver-side air bag module when releasing its securement. Otherwise, it may fall off and be damaged.

8.  Using a flathead screwdriver, lift the locking device carefully, however do not remove it.

9.  Disconnect the air bag module connector.

10.  Disconnect the horn switch connector.

11.  Remove the driver-side air bag module.


Installation

1.  Connect the following connectors.

•  Air bag module connector
•  Horn switch connector

2.  Align the driver-side air bag module pin with the steering wheel hole.

3.  Press the pin of the driver-side air bag module until a click sound is heard.

4.  Verify that the driver-side air bag module is securely installed.

5.  Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).

6.  Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approx. 6 s and goes out.

•  If the air bag system warning light does not operate normally, refer to the on-board diagnostic system (air bag system) and perform inspection of the system. (See FLOWCHART [SAS CONTROL MODULE].)
