DTC P0420 |
Right bank catalyst system efficiency below threshold |
---|---|
DETECTION CONDITION
|
• The PCM monitors right bank catalyst converter efficiency using front HO2S (RH) and rear HO2S (RH) switch rate. If the PCM detects that rear HO2S (RH) signal begins to switch more rapidly with increase amplitude, approaching the switching rate and amplitude of front HO2S (RH), the PCM determines the right bank catalyst converter efficiency below threshold.
|
POSSIBLE CAUSE
|
• Leaded fuel is used
• Damaged front HO2S (RH) and/or rear HO2S (RH)
• Damaged ECT sensor
• Excessive fuel pressure
• Damaged exhaust manifold
• Damaged right bank catalyst converter
• Oil contamination
• Misfire is occurring at right bank cylinder
• Rear HO2S (RH) wiring harness connection improper
• Damaged exhaust system pipe
• Damaged muffler/tail pipe assembly
• Ignition timing retarded

CHECK MANIFOLD VACUUM FOR INDICATION OF EXCESSIVE EXHAUST SYSTEM RESTRICTION
• Attach a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold vacuum source.
• Connect the M-MDS to DLC-2.
• Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
• Access RPM PID.
• Observe the vacuum gauge needle while completing the following:
• -Start the engine and gradually increase the engine speed to 2,000 rpm with the transaxle in NEUTRAL.
• Decrease engine speed to base idle speed.
