POSSIBLE CAUSE	•  ATF •  Powertrain control system malfunction •  Internal and external shift linkage malfunction •  Speed input malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	ATF •  Is the level correct? (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) INSPECTION[LA4AX-EL (CD4E)].)	Yes	Adjust fluid to the proper level
		No	Go to the next step
2	Powertrain control system •  Are there any malfunctions with the following? ―  Electrical input/output ―  Vehicle wiring harness ―  PCM ―  Shift solenoids ―  Transaxle range (TR) switch ―  Throttle position (TP) sensor ―  Vehicle speedometer sensor (VSS) ―  O/D OFF switch	Yes	Run OBD test Perform DTC troubleshooting (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION[LA4AX-EL (CD4E)].)
		No	Go to the next step
3	Internal and external shift linkages •  Do any of the following malfunctions exist? ―  Damage ―  Misadjustment ―  Misassembly	Yes	Service if necessary
		No	Go to the next step
4	Speed input •  Is the vehicle speedometer sensor drive gear damaged?	Yes	Service if necessary
		No	For further diagnosis, refer to the appropriate shift routine (s):
5	•  Verify the test results. ―  If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms. ―  If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform repair or diagnosis. •  If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting is completed. •  If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, replace the PCM.
