Removal

1.  Remove the No.1 engine mount rubber.

(1)  Remove the battery. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

(2)  Remove the air cleaner. (See AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

(3)  Remove the rear transaxle insulator.

(4)  Remove the No.1 engine mount rubber.

2.  Remove the No.1 engine bracket.

3.  Remove the front wheels.

4.  Remove the tie-rod end.

(1)  Remove the cotter pin.

(2)  Remove the nut.

5.  Disconnect the tie-rod end from the knuckle using the SST.

6.  Remove the nuts of the tie-rod end and tie rod.

7.  Remove the boot installation nut.

8.  Remove the bolt between the intermediate shaft and steering gear.

•  Loosen the bolt between the intermediate shaft and steering shaft.

(1)  Slide the boot upward.

(2)  Remove the bolt.

9.  Disconnect the power steering pressure line and return line.

Note

•  Drain excess power steering fluid into an appropriate container.

•  Do not drop the copper washer.

(1)  Slide the boot upward and disconnect the power steering pressure line.

(2)  Disconnect the power steering return line.

10.  Remove the EGR valve. (See EGR PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION[AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

11.  Slightly lower the front crossmember.

12.  Remove the two steering gear mount bolts.

13.  Remove the steering gear from LH side.

Installation

1.  Install the steering gear from LH side.

Note

•  Install the mount bolt and slide the gear rearward at the same time, and then connect the universal joint to the steering shaft.

2.  Install the two steering gear mount bolts.

3.  Connect the power steering pressure line and return line to the steering gear.

Note

•  Verify that the copper washer is installed on the power steering pressure line.

4.  Install the bolt between the steering shaft and steering gear.

(1)  Slide the boot upward.

5.  Install the tie-rod end to the tie rod.

Note

•  Install the tie-rod end according to the number of revolution recorded during removal.

6.  Tighten the tie rod locknut.

7.  Install the tie-rod end to the knuckle.

(1)  Install the nut.

(2)  Install the cotter pin.

8.  Install the front wheels.

9.  Install the No.1 engine bracket.

10.  Install the No.1 engine mount, bolt, and nut.

11.  Add the power steering fluid, bleed the system, and then inspect the system for leakage.

12.  Adjust the front wheel alignment to the specification. (See FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT.)
