Outline

•  The OBD (on-board diagnostic) system has the following functions:
―  Malfunction detection function: Detects malfunctions in the air bag system and outputs DTCs.
―  PID/data monitor function: Reads out specific input/output signals and the system status.
―  Simulation function: Controls operation of simulation items of SAS control module.
•  Diagnostic DTCs can be read/cleared using the M-MDS.
Note
•  When the air bag system is malfunctioning, turning the ignition switch to the ON position will display the current DTCs using the air bag system warning light on the instrument cluster. However the warning light indication is strictly for reference. Make sure to inspect the system using the M-MDS.

Diagnostic Procedure

Note
•  With the air bag module or the SST (diagnostic simulator) installed, inspect the air bag system warning light when the ignition switch is turned from the LOCK position to the ON position. The air bag warning light illuminates for approx. 6 s, then goes out. If the air bag system is malfunctioning, the air bag warning light operates as follows.
―  Does not illuminate
―  Illuminates continuously
―  Flashes
•  Turn the ignition switch from the LOCK position to the ON position. After approx. 30 s, the air bag system warning light starts flashing. This is because the SAS control module takes approx. 30 s to diagnose the air bag system. If both the air bag warning light and the air bag system have a malfunction, five sets of five tone beeps will be heard. In this case, repair the air bag warning light first, then continue diagnosis.

1.  Read all DTCs for the past malfunctions recorded in the SAS control module.

2.  Read DTCs for the present malfunctions.

3.  If past malfunction DTCs and current malfunction DTCs are different, repair current malfunction first, then the past malfunction.

Caution
•  One DTC may indicate several malfunctions. DTCs are not absolute but assist in system diagnosis. Refer to each DTC’s malfunction diagnosis and determine the malfunctioning part. Repair correctly.
