CAMSHAFT INSPECTION

1. Inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or damage in the active area. Minor pitting is acceptable outside the active area.

• If excessive pitting or damage is present, install new components as necessary.

Note

• Camshaft journals must be within specifications before checking runout.

2. Use a Dial Indicator with Bracketry to measure the camshaft runout.

• Rotate the camshaft and subtract the lowest indicator reading from the highest indicator reading.

• If it is out of specification, install new components as necessary.

3. Use a Dial Indicator with Bracketry to measure camshaft intake/exhaust lobe lift.

• Rotate the camshaft and subtract the lowest indicator reading from the highest indicator reading to figure the camshaft lobe lift.

4. Measure each camshaft journal diameter in two directions.

• If it is out of specification, install new components as necessary.

Standard journal diameter

25.960-25.980 mm {1.0221-1.0227 in}

Note

• The camshaft journals must meet specifications before checking camshaft journal clearance.

• Do not turn the camshaft while carrying out this procedure.

5. Remove the camshaft bearing cap and lay Plastigage across the surface.

Position the camshaft bearing cap and install the bolts.

6. Use Plastigage to verify the camshaft journal clearance.

• If it is out of specification, install new components as necessary.

Standard oil clearance

0.020-0.070 mm {0.000787-0.002756 in}

7. Remove the roller followers.

8. Use a Dial Indicator with Bracketry to measure camshaft end play.

9. Position the camshaft to the rear of the cylinder head.

10. Zero the indicator.

11. Move the camshaft to the front of the cylinder head. Note and record the camshaft end play.

• If camshaft end play exceeds specifications, install new camshaft and recheck end play.

• If camshaft end play exceeds specification after camshaft installation, install a new cylinder head.
