CHECK POWER AND GROUND TO THE CRUISE ACTUATOR
Turn the ignition switch off.
Disconnect the cruise actuator connector.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage between the cruise actuator terminals D and A (harness-side).
Is the voltage 10 V or more?

Yes
|
Go to Step 3.
|
No
|
Go to the next step.
|

|
CHECK THE CRUISE ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT
Turn the ignition switch off.
Measure the resistance between the cruise actuator terminal A (harness-side) and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Repair or replace the harnesses.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the harnesses.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK THE BRAKE LIGHT FOR CORRECT OPERATION
Turn the ignition switch off.
Check the brake light for correct operation by depressing and releasing the brake pedal.
Do the brake lights operate correctly?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Refer to Section 09-18.

CHECK THE BRAKE CIRCUIT
Measure the resistance between the following terminals:
• Cruise actuator terminal G and PCM terminal 92 (harness-side)
• Cruise actuator terminal G and ABS HU/CM terminal V (harness-side)
• Cruise actuator terminal G and brake switch terminal A (harness-side)
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.

|
CHECK THE CLUTCH SWITCH OR TR SWITCH
Disconnect the clutch switch connector.
Apply the parking brake.
Shift to P range.
Disconnect the TR switch connector.
On vehicles with a manual transaxle, measure the resistance between the clutch switch terminals B and C (part-side). On vehicles with an automatic transaxle, measure the resistance between the TR switch terminals 9 and 4 (part-side).
Are the resistances more than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
If manual transaxle, install a new clutch switch.
If automatic transaxle, install a new TR switch.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
Measure the resistance between the cruise actuator terminal I (harness-side) and ground.
Is the resistance more than 1,000 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK THE BRAKE SWITCH 2 INPUT TO THE CRUISE ACTUATOR
Measure the voltage between the cruise actuator terminals B and A (harness-side).
Is the voltage 10 V or more?
|
Yes
|
Go to Step 10.
|
No
|
Go to the next step.
|
8
|
CHECK THE BRAKE SWITCH 2
Disconnect the brake switch 2 connector.
Measure the resistance between the brake switch 2 terminals 1 and 2 (part-side).
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Install a new brake switch 2.
Inspect the system for normal operation.

|
CHECK BRAKE SWITCH 2 POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
Measure the voltage between the brake switch 2 terminal B (harness-side) and ground.
Is the voltage 10 V or more?
|
Yes
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK FOR SHORT TO POWER ON CIRCUIT
Measure the voltage between the cruise actuator terminals F and A (harness-side).
Is any voltage indicated?

Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Go to Step 13.
|

CHECK FOR STUCK CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH
Measure the voltage between the cruise actuator terminals F and A (harness-side).
Is any voltage indicated?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Install a new cruise control switch.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
RECHECK CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER
Disconnect the clock spring connector.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage between the cruise actuator terminals F and A (harness-side).
Is any voltage indicated?
|
Yes
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|
No
|
Install a new clock spring.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH OPERATION
Measure the resistance between the cruise actuator terminals F and E (harness-side) while depressing cruise control switch SET/ACCEL.
Is the resistance between 640 and 720 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Go to Step 15.
|

CHECK THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH ON OPERATION
Measure the voltage between the cruise actuator terminals F and A (harness-side) while depressing the speed control switch ON.
Is the voltage 10 V or more?
|
Yes
|
Go to Step 18.
|
No
|
Install a new speed control switch.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK CIRCUIT FOR OPEN
Turn the ignition switch off.
Disconnect the clock spring connector.
Measure the resistance between the clock spring terminal 3 (harness-side) and the cruise actuator terminal F (harness-side).
Is the resistances less than 5 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK CIRCUIT FOR OPEN
Measure the resistance between the clock spring terminal 2 (harness-side) and the cruise actuator terminal E (harness-side).
Is the resistances less than 5 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.

|
CHECK THE CLOCK SPRING
Disconnect the cruise control switch connector.
Measure the resistance between the cruise control switch terminals pin 2 and pin 3 (harness-side) while depressing the cruise control switch SET/ACCEL.
Is the resistance between 640 and 720 ohms?
|
Yes
|
Install a new clock spring.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|
No
|
Install a new cruise control switch.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|

|
CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER OPERATION
Drive the vehicle and observe the speedometer operation.
Does the speedometer operate correctly?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Refer to Section 09-22.

|
CHECK CIRCUIT FOR OPEN
Turn the ignition switch off.
Disconnect the cruise actuator connector.
Disconnect the PCM connector.
Measure the resistance between the cruise actuator terminal H (harness-side) and PCM terminal 28 (YF (2.0L Zetec)), 68 (AJ (3.0L Duratec)) (harness-side).
Is the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Inspect the system for normal operation.

|
CHECK THE ACTUATOR CABLE/THROTTLE BODY LINKAGE
Remove the actuator cable from the cruise actuator. Visually inspect the core wire and check the actuator cable by pulling on it and noting the throttle movement.
Is the actuator cable and throttle body linkage okay?

Yes
|
Install a new cruise actuator.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
|
No
|
Install a new actuator cable or repair the throttle body linkage.
Inspect the system for normal operation.
