AIR BAG DISPOSAL

id081000802700

Warning
• A live (undeployed) air bag module or pre-tensioner front buckle may accidentally operate (deploy) when it is disposed of and cause serious injury. Do not dispose of a live (undeployed) air bag module and pre-tensioner front buckle. If the SSTs (Deployment tool and Adapter harness) are not available, consult the nearest Mazda representative for assistance.
Caution
• Deploying the air bag modules and pre-tensioner front buckles inside the vehicle may cause damage to the vehicle interior. When the vehicle is not to be scrapped, always deploy the air bag modules and pre-tensioner front buckles outside the vehicle.

• If the vehicle is to be scrapped, or when disposing of any air bag modules or pre-tensioner front buckles, operate (deploy) them inside the vehicle by following the deployment procedure below and using the SST (Deployment tool).

Deployment Procedure for Inside of Vehicle

1. Inspect the SST (Deployment tool). (See INSPECTION OF SST (DEPLOYMENT TOOL).)

2. Move the vehicle to an open space, away from strong winds, and close all of the vehicle doors and windows.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more.

5. Follow the procedure below for operating (deploying) the applicable air bag module or pre-tensioner front buckle.

Driver-side Air Bag Module

Three-spoke type

Warning
• Always wear safety glasses when repairing the air bag system vehicle and when servicing an air bag module or pre-tensioner front buckle. This will reduce the risk of injury if the air bag accidentally operates (deploys).
• Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment side away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury if the air bag accidentally operates (deploys).
• Remote operation (deployment) is to be performed outdoors with all personnel at least 6.1 m {20 ft} away to ensure personal safety. Due to the loud noise which is produced when the air bag is operated (deployed), hearing protection is required.
• Do not position the driver-side air bag module with the tear seam facing down. The forces of the operating (deploying) air bag can cause it to ricochet and cause personal injury.

1. Remove the driver-side air bag module.

(See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2. Connect the SSTs (Adapter harness) to the driver-side air bag module as shown in the figure.

3. Install the driver-side air bag module. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

(2) Connect the black clip to the negative battery terminal.

6. Verify that the red light on the SST (Deployment tool) is illuminated.

7. Make sure all personnel are at least 6.1 m {20 ft} away from the air bag module.

8. Using the SST (Deployment tool), operate (deploy) the air bag module by pressing the activation switch.

9. To allow for cooling, wait at least 15 min or more before approaching the operated (deployed) air bag.

10. Dispose of the operated (deployed) air bag module.
