ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles equipped with a 4.6L engine, and with low mileage (less than 1000 miles), may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on and/or a runs rough/misfire condition with one or more of the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0300-P0308, P0316 and/or P0171/P0174. The condition may be the result of fuel injector contamination.

ACTION
Use WDS injector diagnostics to verify the condition is fuel injector related. It may be necessary to replace the fuel filter and all eight (8) fuel injectors. Refer to the following Service Procedure.

NOTE
THIS TSB PROCEDURE ONLY APPLIES TO VEHICLES DURING THE FIRST 1,000 MILES OF THE VEHICLE WARRANTY.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Connect WDS or equivalent and retrieve DTCs.

a. If codes P0300-P0308, P0316 or P0171/P0174 are present proceed to Step 2.

b. If no DTCs are found, or DTCs other than those specified are found, do not continue with this TSB, follow normal diagnostics to repair.

2. Run WDS injector flow test to identify any suspect injectors and make note of test results.

a. If WDS results indicate one or more injector low flow conditions (high ms duration) proceed to Step 3.

b. If WDS passes injector flow, or results indicate a high flow condition (low ms duration), do not continue with this TSB. Follow normal diagnostics to repair.

3. Replace the fuel filter and proceed to Step 4. Refer to Section 310-00 for fuel filter replacement.

4. Replace all eight (8) fuel injectors. Refer to Section 303-04B of the workshop manual for injector replacement procedure.

5. Clear PCM DTCs.

6. Return vehicle to customer.
