DATE: Oct. 15, 1993
SUBJECT:
Creaking At Left B-Pillar
MODELS:
1994 (AS) Caravan/Grand Caravan/Caravan CV
Voyager/Grand Voyager/Town & Country
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 10/01/93 (MDH 1001XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
An intermittent creaking sound may be heard coming from the area of the left B-pillar when the vehicle is driven over uneven or rough road surfaces.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using thumb or palm pressure, press on the upper door jamb area of the left B-pillar, refer to the illustration. If a creaking noise is heard, perform the repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves repositioning the metal portion of the left B-pillar baffle.
1. Remove the body exhauster assembly from the B-pillar by inserting a thin blade screwdriver into the slot at the top of the exhauster and carefully prying.
2. Using a light and mirror look up into the B-pillar cavity and determine the point of interference between the metal portion of the baffle and the body sheetmetal of the B-pillar. The baffle consists of black or dark gray expandable foam sealer that is attached to a sheetmetal plate by a heavy duty staple through the middle of the plate. The metal portion of the baffle acts only as a carrier for the sealer during the assembly process.
3. Using an appropriate tool, bend the metal portion of the baffle away from the B-pillar sheetmetal so clearance is obtained. Be careful to not disturb the adhesion of the foam sound deadener to the sheetmetal of the B-pillar cavity. Interference is most likely to occur at the front corners and/or front edge of the baffle.
4. Repeat the diagnosis procedure and verify the creaking has been eliminated. If the noise still exists, determine the additional point(s) of interference and obtain clearance.
5. Reinstall the body exhauster assembly.
