Noise In The Cabriolet Top Compartment Lid Area
Vehicle Type:
Boxster/Boxster S
Model Year:
'03 (3)
Concerns:
Noises in convertible top compartment lid area (groaning, squeaking, crackling), and chafing marks on the trim strip of the convertible top compartment lid.
Information:
Noises occur in the area of the left and right tips of the convertible top compartment lid.
This is caused by insufficient clearance between the convertible top and the convertible top compartment lid. This causes chafing of the trim strip on the convertible top compartment lid in this area (Figure 1, arrow).
A sliding strip has been applied in this area on the bottom of the trim strip on the left and right as of March 17th.
In the event of a complaint, the sliding strip is to be retrofitted on the trim strip.
Introduction:
Parts Information:
Required Tools:
Ruler
Knife
Scissors
Pencil
Lint-free cloth
Work Procedure:
Retrofitting self-adhesive sliding strip on the left and right on the bottom of the trim strip for the convertible top compartment lid.
1. Use the rocker switch to operate the convertible top and move it to the rear end position. Then briefly move the rocker switch in the "close" direction until the rear edge of the convertible top compartment lid is raised by approx. 5 cm.
2. Work on the left side of the convertible top compartment lid.
2.1 Clean the trim strip of the convertible top compartment lid.
Caution!
The sliding strip will not adhere properly if the trim strip is not cleaned with care.
> Using a lint-free cloth and the cleaning agent, carefully clean the trim strip over a length of around 30 cm, measured from the start of the trim strip (Figure 2).
> Do not touch the cleaned surface with the fingers.
2.2 Using a ruler and pencil, make a mark on the trim strip of the convertible top compartment lid at a distance of 95 +/- 5 mm - measured from the start of the trim strip (Figure 2; the picture shows the bottom of the trim strip without convertible top compartment lid).
2.3 Cut two pieces measuring 15 cm each from the roll of sliding strip.
2.4 Preparations for improved handling of the sliding strip when fitting:
2.4.1 Cut a radius, r = approx. 5 to 8 mm, at all four corners of the sliding strip using a pair of scissors.
2.4.2 Bend the sliding strip lengthways and in the center to an angle of around 90° on the paper side, but do not crease it (Figure 3; A = paper side).
2.5 Work on the sliding strip.
Caution!
The sliding strip will not adhere properly if the adhesive surface is contaminated with grease, dirt etc.
> Do not touch the adhesive surface with the fingers.
> With a clean knife tip or fingernail, separate the sliding strip from the paper lengthways up the location of the bend. Then fold the paper onto the lower half.
2.6 Apply the sliding strip onto the bottom of the trim strip. To do this, position the sliding strip on the trim strip - starting at the pencil marking - and apply it at a uniform distance of approx. 3 mm from the rounded edge of the trim strip (Figure 4; the illustration shows a sectional view of the trim strip and sliding strip).
Caution!
Insufficient adhesion and damage to the sliding strip due to blisters and or creasing.
> After applying the sliding strip, uniformly smooth it out by gently rubbing it with a lint-free cloth, starting in the center.
> Peel off the bottom half of the paper and uniformly smooth out the sliding strip with the cloth, starting in the center.
2.7 Remove the pencil marking.
3. Work on the right side of the convertible top compartment lid in the same way.
4. Close the convertible top approximately half-way and once again firmly press the sliding strips into place with the cloth.
5. Close the convertible top.
