24. 4 - 5 Clutch Drum Assembly Assemble

4 - 5 CLUTCH DRUM ASSEMBLY ASSEMBLE

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 45185 Bore Gage Set





IMPORTANT: Soak the new clutch discs in automatic transaxle fluid for at least 2 hours before installation.

1. Inspect sliding surface of the disc and plate for being worn or burnt. If the disc or plate is worn or burnt, replace it.
2. Shake the piston to be sure check ball is free.





CAUTION: WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR IN ORDER TO PREVENT EYE INJURY.

3. Apply compressed air in order to inspect the valve for leaks.

IMPORTANT: Measure the inner diameter of 4-5 clutch drum bushing at different locations and take an average of all measurements. If the average measurement is not within specifications, replace 4-5 clutch drum bushing with a new one.

4. Using the Bore Gage Set J45185, measure the inner diameter of the 4-5 clutch drum bushing.





IMPORTANT: Be careful not to damage O-rings during installation.

5. Apply automatic transaxle fluid to the new O-rings.
6. Install new inner O-ring (581) and outer O-ring (583) onto piston (582).
7. Apply automatic transaxle fluid to the inner surface of the underdrive clutch drum.
8. Install 4-5 clutch piston assembly into the 4-5 clutch drum assembly.





9. Install 4-5 clutch piston return spring assembly onto the 4-5 clutch piston assembly indexing springs to the holes in 4-5 clutch piston assembly.





IMPORTANT: Make sure the end gap of snap ring is not aligned with spring retainer claw.

10. Using J21420-2 which is a part of J23327, place under 4-5 clutch assembly. Place J45186 on spring retainer and compress springs.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you have the correct number of plates and they are in the correct order.

11. Install fiber plates (577) and steel plates (578).
12. Install 4-5 clutch backing plate.





13. Using J28585, install 4-5 clutch backing plate retaining ring into groove. Make sure the end gap of snap ring is not aligned with one of the cutouts.
