Rack and Pinion Boot Replacement

^ Tools Required
- SA9164C Clamp Pliers

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel.
3. Remove the outer tie rod end.
4. Remove the inner tie rod to outer tie rod jam nut. Record the number of threads.





5. Remove the outer boot clamp.
6. Remove the inner boot clamp using a cutter. Discard the clamp.
7. Remove the steering gear boot from the steering gear.
8. Clean any dirt or foreign debris from the boot sealing surfaces and steering shaft.

Installation Procedure
1. Install a new inner boot clamp on the steering gear boot.





2. Important: The sealing surfaces must be clean, dry and free of debris prior to boot installation.

Apply grease provided in the service kit to the indicated locations.
3. Slide the boot over the tie rod end in order to seat the boot in the steering gear groove.





4. Use the SA9164C to crimp the clamp securing the boot to the steering gear housing.
5. Install the clamp on outer end of the boot.





6. Thread the jam nut on to the inner tie rod the number of threads recorded during removal.
7. Install the outer tie rod end.
8. Install the tire and wheel.
9. Adjust the front toe.
10. Lower the vehicle.
