Bulletin No.: 08-08-51-005

Date: June 24, 2008

Subject:
Rust or Paint Blistering Around Chrome Liftgate Applique (Refinish Liftgate/Apply Two-Way Tape)

Models:
2006-2007 Saturn VUE

Condition

Some customers may comment that bubbles are forming under the paint or rust stains are forming around the chrome liftgate applique.

Cause

This condition may be caused by insufficient isolation of the chrome applique from the painted liftgate, resulting in deterioration of the painted surface.

Correction

1. Remove the liftgate trim panel, the outside liftgate handle, the chrome applique and the emblems following the procedures in SI.

2. Refinish the liftgate.

For the proper refinish materials to use, refer to the 2008 GMWI5406 GM Globally Approved Refinish Materials information. The refinish materials information is now online at the GMGOODWRENCH WEB SITE*. Printed books have been discontinued. To access the site, follow these steps:

3. Before the applique is reinstalled, lightly sand down any rough or sharp spots on the back of the applique.

4. Apply *3M(TM) Automotive Adhesion Promoter 06396 to the back edge of the chrome applique.

5. Apply *3M(TM) Nameplate Repair Tape to the backside perimeter of the applique.

6. Using a razor blade, trim the excess tape off the outside perimeter of the applique without cutting into the chrome applique.

7. Reinstall the chrome applique, the outside liftgate handle, the emblems and the trim panel following the procedures in SI.
