Valve Clearance: Adjustments
1. Obtain audio anti-theft code, if equipped, as outlined in Technician Safety Information.2. On models with air bag, disable system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
3. On models less air bag, disconnect battery ground cable.
4. Drain coolant from engine.
Fig. 2 Exploded View Of Engine Components.:
5. Remove MAF sensor, IAT sensor, air hose and upper air cleaner as a unit, then the lower air cleaner housing, Fig. 2.
6. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle body, then remove intake air connector tube.
7. On models with A/C, remove A/C idle-up valve.
8. Disconnect spark plug wires.
9. Disconnect and remove all connectors and hoses from throttle body, then remove throttle body.
10. Disconnect electrical connectors and wiring attached to cylinder head cover, then remove cylinder head cover.

Fig. 13 Exhaust To Intake Camshaft Timing Marks.:
11. With engine cold, set engine to No. 1 cylinder TDC compression stroke by aligning matchmarks shown in Figs. 3 and 13.
12. With engine in this position check clearance of the following valves:
a. No. 1 intake and exhaust valves.
b. No. 2 intake valves.
c. No. 3 exhaust valves.
d. Record these readings.

Fig. 17 Valve Adjustment Shim Removal.:
13. If any measurement was found outside specifications, remove valve adjustment shim using valve lifter cam wrench set tool No. SST 09248-55040, or equivalent, to depress lifter and a magnet to remove shim, Figs. 16 and 17.
14. Using a micrometer measure thickness of removed shim, record this dimension.
Fig. 18 Intake Camshaft Shim Table.:
Fig. 19 Exhaust Camshaft Shim Table.:
15. Determine difference between desired and actual valve clearance measurement, add difference to dimension of measured shim. Refer to shim charts, Figs. 18 and 19 to select a replacement.
16. Install new shim in lifter, then remove lifter tools. Repeat steps 13 through 16 for any other valves found out of adjustment.
17. Rotate crankshaft pulley two full turns, recheck valves as outlined in steps 11 through 14.
18. Turn crankshaft pulley 360°(one complete revolution) and align timing marks as outlined previously and check the following valves:
a. No. 2 exhaust valves.
b. No. 3 intake valves.
c. No. 4 intake and exhaust valves, record readings, then repeat steps 13 through 16 if necessary.
19. Reverse procedure to install. Reset audio coded anti-theft and air bag system, if equipped, as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
