2UZ-FE ENGINE MECHANICAL: TIMING BELT: REMOVAL
REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
NOTICE:
- After the ignition switch is turned OFF, the navigation system requires approximately 90 seconds to record various types of memory and setting. As a result, after turning the ignition switch OFF, wait 90 seconds or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Repair Instruction - Initialization.
2. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER Replacement
3. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT Service and Repair
4. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY Removal
5. REMOVE AIR CLEANER HOSE ASSEMBLY Removal
6. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY Removal
7. REMOVE RADIATOR HOSE INLET
8. REMOVE RADIATOR HOSE OUTLET
9. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT Removal
10. REMOVE FLUID COUPLING ASSEMBLY
(a) Loosen the 4 fluid coupling nuts.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and fluid coupling nuts. Then remove the fan together with the fan shroud.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the radiator core.
(c) Remove the fan pulley.
11. DISCONNECT COOLER COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Remove the 3 bolts, nut and No. 1 compressor stay and disconnect the cooler compressor.
12. DISCONNECT VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Remove the nut, 2 bolts and vane pump assembly.
HINT: Hang up the hoses instead of detaching them.
13. REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY Removal
14. REMOVE OIL COOLER PIPE
(a) Remove the cap nut and bolt.
(b) Using needle-nose pliers, grip the claws of the clamps and slide the clamps to disconnect the 3 water by-pass hoses and remove the oil cooler pipe.
15. REMOVE NO. 2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the pulley bolt, cover plate and idler pulley.
16. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
(a) Remove the 3 bolts, nut and timing belt cover.
17. REMOVE NO. 3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Disconnect the engine wire from the 2 wire clamps.
(b) Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
(c) Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wire from the wire clamp on the timing belt cover.
(d) Remove the wire grommet from the timing belt cover.
(e) Remove the 4 bolts.
(f) Pull the cover outward, pull the camshaft position sensor wire out of the cover, and remove the cover.
18. REMOVE NO. 2 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and timing belt cover.
19. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and V-ribbed belt tensioner.
20. REMOVE FAN BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 2 nuts, 2 bolts and fan bracket.
21. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
(a) Using SST, remove the pulley set bolt.
SST: 09213-70011
SST: 09330-00021
(b) Using SST, remove the crankshaft pulley.

22. REMOVE NO. 1 TIMING BELT COVER
(a) Remove the 4 bolts, timing belt cover, cover spacer and gasket.
23. REMOVE NO. 1 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE
24. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC / COMPRESSION
(a) Temporarily install the pulley set bolt.
(b) Rotate the crankshaft clockwise so that the timing marks on the crankshaft timing gear and camshaft timing gears are as shown in the illustration.
HINT: If the timing marks do not align, rotate the crankshaft clockwise again and align the timing marks.
25. REMOVE TIMING BELT
(a) Set the No. 1 cylinder to approximately 45° BTDC/compression.
(1) Using the pulley set bolt, turn the crankshaft counterclockwise by approximately 45°.
NOTE: If the timing belt is disengaged, having the crankshaft pulley at a wrong angle can cause the piston head and valve head to come into contact with each other when removing the camshaft timing pulley and camshaft, causing damage. So always set the crankshaft pulley at the correct angle.
(b) Alternately loosen the 2 bolts, then remove the bolts, timing belt tensioner and dust boot.
(c) Using a wrench, loosen the tension between the camshaft timing pulley (for bank 2) and crankshaft timing pulley by turning the camshaft timing pulley (for bank 2) counterclockwise slightly.
(d) Disconnect the timing belt from the No. 1 timing belt idler and remove the timing belt.
26. REMOVE NO. 1 TIMING BELT IDLER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the bolt, idler and plate washer.
27. REMOVE NO. 2 TIMING BELT IDLER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the bolt and idler.
