Rear View Display on Navigation Screen Is Dark
SYMPTOM
When the ambient temperature is below 25 degrees F and you shift the transmission into reverse, the navigation system screen changes from normal brightness to a rear view camera image that is very dark or almost black.
NOTE:
The following conditions will cause the display to dim in both the navigation and rear view modes. They are normal and are not part of the symptom.
^ Colder temperatures.
^ The navigation system display brightness control is set to AUTO and the headlights are turned on.
^ With the headlights switch set to the AUTO position, the automatic lighting feature can cause the headlights to come on without the driver's knowledge.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The rear view camera control unit is faulty.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the rear view camera control unit.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the right side C-pillar and D-pillar trim (see page 20-56 in the 2003 MDX Service Manual).
2. Remove the passenger's side third row seat (see page 20-102 in the service manual).
3. On cars equipped with RES (Rear Entertainment System), remove the auxiliary jack assembly located in the right side rear compartment.
4. Remove the right side rear trim panel (see page 20-57 in the service manual).
5. Remove the two 6 mm bolts from the rear view camera control unit, disconnect the two connectors, and remove the unit.
6. Plug the two connectors into the new rear view camera control unit.
7. Install the control unit with the original bolts. Torque the bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).
8. Check the operation of the rear view camera.
9. Install all parts in reverse order of removal.
