Product Update: MDX Climate Control Unit

BACKGROUND

American Honda is announcing a product update campaign to replace the climate control unit in certain MDXs. On affected vehicles, the climate control unit is improperly programmed. In rare cases, this may cause the heater to work intermittently.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this product update. An example of the customer notification is shown in this service bulletin.

Not all vehicles within the affected VIN range are affected by this update. Before beginning work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by checking at least one of these items:

^ The customer has a notification letter.

^ The vehicle is shown on your campaign responsibility report.

^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.

In addition to these verification items, check for a punch mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means the climate control unit has already been replaced.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new vehicle inventory. These vehicles should be repaired before they are sold or leased. To see if a new vehicle is affected by this update, do a VIN status inquiry.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the climate control unit.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
^ Before you begin, make sure the interior temperature of the vehicle is above 40°F (4°C).

Make sure you do the self-diagnosis function after you install the new climate control unit.

1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

2. Replace the climate control unit:

^ Refer to page 21-56 of the 2005 MDX Service Manual.

^ Enter keyword CLIMATE CONTROL, and select Climate Control Unit Removal and Installation from the list.





3. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.
