SRS DTC Troubleshooting: 81-61, 81-62, 85-61, 85-62
DTC 81-61, 85-61:
No Signal from the ODS Unit
DTC 81-62, 85-62:
Incorrect Data from the ODS Unit
NOTE: Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, review SRS Precautions and Procedures Service and Repair, General Troubleshooting Information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection Procedures.
1. Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat, and make sure nothing in the seat-back pocket.
2. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.
4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC 81-61, 85-61, 81-62, or 85-62 indicated?
YES -
Go to step 5.
NO -
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures. If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.
5. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
6. Check the No. 9 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
Is the fuse OK?
YES -
Go to step 7.
NO -
Replace the fuse, then turn the ignition switch to ON (II). If the fuse blows again, check for a short in the No. 9 (7.5 A) fuse circuit (dashboard wire harness, SRS wire harness, or front passenger's seat wire harness ); replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
7. Check the connection between the front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector (A) and the ODS unit (B).
Is the connection OK?
YES -
Go to step 8.
NO -
Repair the poor connection and retest. If DTC 81-61, 81-62, 85-61, or 85-62 is still present, go to step 8.
8. Disconnect the front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector (A) from the ODS unit (B).
9. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
10. Measure the voltage between body ground and front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector terminal No. 1. There should be battery voltage.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to step 11.
NO -
Open in the dashboard harness, the SRS wire harness, or the front passenger's seat wire harness; check for poor connection at C405 and C702. If connection is OK, replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
11. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
12. Measure the resistance between body ground and front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector terminal No. 12. There should be less than 1.0 Ohms.
Is the resistance as specified?
YES -
Go to step 13.
NO -
Open in the SRS wire harness, front passenger's seat wire harness, or poor connection at connection C702. Check the ground connection at G552. Check the connection; If the connection is OK, replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
13. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
14. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.
15. Disconnect SRS unit connector A (28P) from the SRS unit.
16. Measure the resistance between body ground and SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14. There should be an open circuit or at least 1 MOhms.
Is the resistance as specified?
YES -
Go to step 18.
NO -
Short to ground in the harness between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14 and the front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector terminal No. 7 (dashboard wire harness, SRS wire harness, or front passenger's seat wire harness); replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
17. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
18. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
19. Measure the voltage between body ground and SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14. There should be less than 0.2 V
Is the voltage as specified?
YES -
Go to step 20.
NO -
Short to power in the harness between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14 and the front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector terminal No. 7 (dashboard wire harness, SRS wire harness, front passenger's seat wire harness); replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
20. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
21. Measure the resistance between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14 and the front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector terminal No. 7. There should be less than 1.0 Ohms.
Is the resistance as specified?
YES -
Faulty ODS unit or SRS unit; replace the ODS unit ODS Unit Replacement, then clear the DTC, and retest. If the DTC is still present, replace the SRS unit SRS Unit Replacement.
NO -
Open in the harness between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14 and the front passenger's seat wire harness 18P connector terminal No. 7 (dashboard wire harness, SRS wire harness, front passenger's seat wire harness). Check for poor connection at C405 and C702. If the connection is OK, replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
