Parking and Back-Up Sensor System Description

Parking and Back-Up Sensor System Description

Parking and Back-Up Sensor System

The parking and back-up sensor (obstacle detection) system consists of two corner sensors and two center sensors on the rear bumper, a parking and back-up sensor control unit located in the right side of the trunk, and a rear sensor beeper located under the passenger's side of the dashboard. When any of the rear bumper sensors detect an obstacle near the vehicle while backing, the parking and back-up sensor control unit alerts the driver with a beeping sound

The sensors detect obstacles by sending ultra-sonic waves and receiving returned waves reflected off the obstacle.

- The parking and back-up sensor system activates when the ignition switch is turned to ON (II) and the shift lever is moved to its R.
- The rear sensor beeper sounds once every second when the ignition switch is ON (II) and the shift lever is in the R position, with its beeper tone changing when the vehicle backs up and an obstacle enters a sensor's detecting range.

Sound Pattern of the Rear Sensor Beeper

The two rear corner sensors can detect obstacles up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) away, while the two rear center sensors can detect obstacles up to 150 cm (4.9 ft). Once an obstacle enters a sensor's detecting range, that sensor triggers the beeper, whose ON/OFF alert tone varies as detailed in the charts below.
