DTC Troubleshooting: B1389
DTC B1389:
Power Tailgate Motor Clutch Circuit Malfunction
NOTE: If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A Troubleshooting - B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A.
1. Open the tailgate with the tailgate outer handle.
2. Close the tailgate automatically with the inside tailgate switch.
3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then back to ON (II).
4. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC B1389 indicated?
YES -
Go to step 6.
NO -
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for loose or poor connections between the power tailgate control unit and the power tailgate drive unit.�
6. Check the No. 2-4 (PTG MTR) (40 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box.
Is the fuse OK?
YES -
Go to step 7.
NO -
Replace the fuse. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. 2-4(PTG MTR) (40 A) fuse circuit.�
7. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
8. Disconnect power tailgate control unit connector A (5P).
9. Measure the voltage between power tailgate control unit connector A (5P) terminal No. 2 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to step 10.
NO -
Repair an open or high resistance in the wire.�
10. Disconnect power tailgate control unit connector B (20P).
11. Check for continuity between body ground and power tailgate control unit connector B (20P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 individually.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 12.
NO -
Go to step 14.
12. Disconnect power tailgate drive unit connector B (8P).
13. Check for continuity between body ground and power tailgate control unit connector B (20P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 individually.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair a short to ground in the wire.�
NO -
Replace the power tailgate drive unit Service and Repair.�
14. Disconnect power tailgate drive unit connector B (8P).
15. Check for continuity between power tailgate control unit connector B (20P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 and power tailgate drive unit connector B (8P) terminals No. 1 and No. 3 respectively.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to step 17.
NO -
Repair an open or high resistance in the wire.�
16. Reconnect power tailgate drive unit connector B (8P).
17. Check for continuity between power tailgate drive unit connector B (8P) terminals No. 1 and No. 3.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Replace the power tailgate control unit Service and Repair.�
NO -
Replace the power tailgate drive unit Service and Repair.�
