Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


AUDI 80/90 & 4000

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove upper engine/transaxle bolts, then install engine support fixture 10-222A or equivalent.
3. Remove both front engine stop bolts and the starter motor.
4. Remove 3 bolts securing drive plate to torque converter through starter opening, then remove converter dust shield.
5. Clamp off coolant hoses at transaxle cooler, then disconnect hoses from cooler.
6. Raise and support vehicle and remove bolts securing inner CV joints to transaxle. Secure RH drive axle aside with wire.
7. Mark position of LH ball joint, remove bolts securing joint to control arm, disconnect LH driveshaft, then secure LH wheel and suspension assembly.
8. Remove filler tube and drain transaxle into suitable container.
9. Remove brackets securing exhaust pipe to transaxle.
10. Remove selector cable and accelerator pedal cable brackets and disconnect cable from transaxle and selector lever.
11. Remove center bolt from transaxle mount and raise engine slightly with engine support fixture.
12. Remove throttle cable bracket retaining bolts and the bracket.
13. Raise transaxle slightly with suitable jack, then remove lower engine/transaxle bolts.
14. Separate transaxle from engine, then lower transaxle from vehicle, ensuring converter remains with transaxle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure torque converter is properly seated and can be rotated by hand. When converter is properly seated, distance between face of converter hub and transaxle to engine mating surface is approximately 10 mm (25/64 inch).
b. Torque engine/transaxle bolts to 41 ft.lbs. and converter bolts to 22 ft.lbs.
c. Torque transaxle mount bolt to 30 ft.lbs., CV joint bolts to 33 ft.lbs. and ball joint bolts to 48 ft.lbs.
d. Check wheel alignment and adjustment of controls and correct as needed.
