Ignition Cable: Testing and Inspection

1. Visually inspect wires and connectors. Replace any wires or connectors that show signs of arcing or are physically damaged.

2. Disconnect ignition wires at both ends and check resistance as follows:

Fig. 16 Ignition Cable Resistance Test:

COIL WIRE
With radio
RESISTANCE: 2000 +/- 800 ohms
Without radio
RESISTANCE: 0 ohms

SPARK PLUG WIRES
With radio
RESISTANCE: 6000 +/- 1400 ohms
Without radio
RESISTANCE: 1000 +/- 400 ohms

If resistance is not within specification, check individual components.

Fig. 17 Spark Plug Connector:

SPARK PLUG CONNECTORS
With radio
RESISTANCE: 5000 +/- 1000 ohms
Without radio
RESISTANCE: 1000 +/- 400 ohms

Fig. 18 Distributor Cap Connector:

CAP CONNECTORS
RESISTANCE: 1000 +/- 400 ohms

IGNITION WIRES (without connectors)
RESISTANCE: 0 ohms

If resistance is greater than specified for any wire or connector, replace it.
