Ignition Timing: Adjustments

The ignition timing is computer controlled and is not actually adjustable, however, the distributor basic position must be correctly set for proper control of the ignition timing.
The distributor is difficult to see when installed. For this reason, you will need Audi special tool #3179, or equivalent, to properly set the distributor basic position.

1. Remove spark plug from #1 cylinder and install compression gauge in spark plug threaded hole.

2. Turn crankshaft by hand, in the normal direction of rotation until compression shows on gauge.

Crankshaft TDC, Camshaft Timing Mark And Distributor Rotor Correctly Positioned:

3. Continue turning crankshaft until TDC timing mark on flywheel lines up with pointer in window of bell housing (figure 1).

At this point the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket should line up with its timing mark on the valve cover (figure 2), and #1 piston should be at TDC of its compression stroke ready to fire.

4. Remove distributor cap and install special tool with timing pointers.

5. Check rotor position with special tool.

^ Rotor should be pointing directly at the tallest pointer on the special tool (figure 3). At this time, the window of the trigger wheel should be directly lined up with the hall sensor.

If not, loosen distributor hold-down bolt, rotate the distributor until the rotor is properly lined up with timing tool pointer, and re-tighten bolt.
