Backup Lamp: Description and Operation
Circuit Description
On manual transmission cars, electrical power for the back-up lights is supplied via fuse #12 (S12) on the main fuse/relay panel. The circuit is powered whenever the ignition switch is in the "On" or "Run" position ("15" circuit). The back-up lights are switched on and off by the back-up light switch on the transaxle.
On 1988-1990 automatic transmission cars, power to the back-up lights is controlled by the gear selector/back-up light switch, which is part of the gear selector lever assembly in the center console. The same switch informs the shift lock system of gear selector lever position. Also Circuit Section entitled Cruise Control/Shift Lock. Electrical Diagrams
On cars with the 4-speed automatic transmission, the electronic control unit supplies power to the back-up lights whenever the transmission's multifunction switch indicates that reverse gear is selected. Also Circuit Section entitled Four-speed Automatic Transmission.
