When to Check

WHEN TO CHECK ALIGNMENT

Note:
Wheel alignment should be checked using wheel alignment equipment specified by Audi of America, Inc. During alignment work, all four wheels should be checked. Otherwise, proper handling characteristics of the vehicle cannot be ensured.

- After at least 1000-2000 km (600-1200 miles), once coil springs have settled
- Thereafter as necessary
- Following certain service and repair procedures as specified in this information

ALIGNMENT PROBLEM VS. WHEEL PROBLEM

NOTE:
^ Following repairs to the suspension, and prior to checking wheel alignment, road test the vehicle at its curb weight (1). Sometimes, poor vehicle handling characteristics result from wheel problems:
^ Wheel imbalance
^ Excessive radial runout
^ Correct as necessary
(1) Curb weight is the weight of a vehicle ready for the road: with full fuel tank, equipped with spare tire, tool kit and jack.

ALIGNMENT EQUIPMENT
Wheel alignment can be best checked using optical alignment equipment. If necessary when such equipment is not available, camber can also be measured using the 3021 protractor.

CHECKING REQUIREMENTS
- Approved wheel alignment equipment properly adjusted
- Vehicle at curb weight (1)
- Equal tread depth for both tires on same axle (difference not more than 2 mm)
- Tires inflated to specified pressures
- Vehicle correctly positioned, suspension bounced several times, and settled
- No excessive play or damage to steering and steering linkage
- No excessive play or damage to suspension
(1) Curb weight is the weight of a vehicle ready for the road: with full fuel tank, equipped with spare tire, tool kit and jack.

NOTE:
^ Always make wheel alignment settings and adjustments as close as possible to the specified values.
^ It is good practice to wait until the car has travelled about 1000 to 2000 km (600 to 1200 miles) before checking wheel alignment, since the vehicle has to cover this distance before the suspension has properly settled.
^ After carrying out service work on the suspension, carry out a road test with loaded vehicle. Cause for vehicle unevenness could also be caused by too large of residual imbalance and/or height of wheels.
