Air Injection Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection

SECONDARY AIR INJECTION (AIR) PUMP RELAY, CHECKING:
Requirements:

- Fuel pump relay OK.
- Fuses for secondary air injection pump relay OK.

NOTE: The relay for the secondary air injection pump is located in the relay station in the right-front footwell.

- Switch ignition off.

- Remove covering for lower right A-pillar.
- Pull back carpet in right-front footwell.

Checking voltage supply for secondary air injection pump relay:

- Remove secondary air injection pump relay from relay panel position 5.
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between relay panel socket 2 and Ground (GND).

The voltage tester LED must light up.

- Connect VAG 15278 voltage tester between relay panel socket 6 and Ground (GND), then operate starter briefly.

Voltage tester LED must light up.

If LED does not light up:
- Eliminate break in wiring using wiring diagram.

Checking triggering for secondary air injection pump relay:

- Switch ignition on.
- Connect VAG 15278 voltage tester between relay panel sockets 2 and 4.

NOTE: Voltage tester with low current draw will have a dim light.

- Use scan tool "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function O3 to trigger Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.

Voltage tester LED must light up brightly for about 10 seconds when triggering the relay.

If the LED lights brightly after triggering (triggering OK):
- Replace secondary air injection pump relay -J299-.

If the LED lights up brightly or does not light up at all:
- Connect test box VAG 1598/19 to wiring harness.

If the voltage tester LED lights up constantly:
- Check wiring between relay panel socket 4, test box socket A18, and Ground (GND) connection.

If voltage tester does not light up at all:
- Check wiring for continuity between relay panel socket 4 and test box socket A18.
- If necessary eliminate ground connection or break in wiring.
- If there is no break in wiring, replace ECM.
