Removing and Installing: Overview







Note: The differential can be removed and installed without disassembling the shift mechanism, input shaft, pinion and cover (not shown). Disassembly of the afore mentioned parts is necessary for adjusting the differential.

1. Flanged shaft
- Remove in order to remove differential: refer to "Procedures"
- Drive in with VW 295
2. Circlip
- Always replace
- Removing and installing: refer to "Procedures"
3. Transmission housing
4. Shim S2
- Note thickness
- List of adjustments: Adjustments
5. Outer race of small tapered roller bearing
- Removing: refer to "Procedures"
- Installing: refer to "Procedures"
6. Inner race of small tapered roller bearing
- Removing: refer to "Procedures"
- Press on with insertion sleeve
7. Differential
- Disassembling and assembling: refer to "Disassembing and Assembling/Overview" at Final Drive, Differential. Service and Repair
8. Inner race of large tapered roller bearing
- Removing: refer to "Procedures"
- Press on with insertion sleeve
9. Outer race of large tapered roller bearing
- Removing: refer to "Procedures"
- Drive in with drift VW 295 and thrust plate VW 511
10. Shim S1
- Note thickness
- List of adjustments: Adjustments
11. Cover for final drive
- Seal with AMV 188 200 03
12. Torx bolt
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
13. Seal
- Remove with VW 681
- Inserting: refer to "Procedures"
14. Speedometer gear
- For electronic speedometer
- Can be replaced with transmission installed: refer to Transmission Speed Sensor. Service and Repair
- Installation position: refer to Transmission Speed Sensor. Service and Repair
15. Seal
- Remove with VW 681
- Installing: refer to "Procedures"
