Catch For 5th And Reverse Gear
1. Plastic bushing
2. 0-ring
3. Bushing with catch for 5th and reverse gear
4. Spring
Assembling:
- Insert spring -4- into plastic bushing -1-, compress slightly, and turn counterclockwise until spring engages in base of plastic bushing.
- Place plastic bushing -3- on spring so that bent end of spring is located in groove provided.
- Compress spring with bushing -3-, tighten approx. one turn counterclockwise (to left) until lug on bushing -3- is positioned above groove in plastic bushing.
- Push lug of bushing -3- into groove in plastic bushing -1- as far as it will go.
- Turn bushing -3- clockwise (to right) and release.
Bushing -3- will spring into final installed position.
Final Installed Position Of 5th/reverse Gear Catch
- Lug (arrow -A-) of bushing for 5th and reverse gear must always be opposite the groove (arrow -B-) of the plastic bushing in the final installed position.
Note: If after adjusting the shift lever linkage, 5th and reverse gear are still sticking or snagging, remove and check the 5th and reverse gear catch (replace if necessary) before removing and disassembling the transmission.

- Dimension -a- = 21 mm (0.83 in.)
Removing Bushing (arrow) For 3rd And 4th Gear Shift Rod From Transmission Housing
- Use special tool VW 771 and internal extractor -A-, e.g. Kukko 21/3 18.5-23.5 mm

Insertion Depth of Needle Bearing
- Dimension -a- from housing surface (bottom of straight edge) to top edge of needle bearing = 39.5 mm (1.56 in.).
