VAG 1710 Test Sequence

Preparation
1. Meet Test requirements. Test Requirements
2. Check DTC memory. Checking Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory
3. Raise vehicle on lift until all wheels can be moved freely.

NOTE:
^ Automatic transmission gear selector lever in Neutral ("N")
^ Parking brake not engaged

4. Switch ignition off.
5. Disconnect harness connector from ABS control module, then re-connect to VAG1710 ABS tester.
6. Adjust coding switch on VAG1710/1 adapter cable to switch position 2.

WARNING:
^ Do not drive with test equipment connected
^ Do not test the braking system on a brake dynamometer.

NOTE:
^ ABS warning light -K47- comes on while the ignition is switched on in test steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.
^ If the LED (-1-) on the ABS tester goes out while testing, check the voltage supply to the ABS control module -J104-.

Test Step 1

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 1 (Part 1 Of 4):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 1 (Part 2 Of 4):

Test Of:
- Voltage supply to ABS control module -J 104-

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 1 (Part 3 Of 4):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 1 (Part 4 Of 4):

Test Of:
- Ground connection for ABS control module -J 104-
- ABS warning light -K47-
- Inlet/outlet valves in ABS hydraulic unit -N55- (resistance)

NOTE:
^ If one of the LEDs (- 1-, -3-, and -4. 1- to -4.4-) is not as bright, this indicates terminal contact resistance.
^ Check related wiring and connectors according to the wiring diagrams.

Test Step 2

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 2 (Part 1 Of 2):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 2 (Part 2 Of 2):

Test Of:
- Brake light switch -F-

NOTE: If LED -I- (above) comes on, check wiring to ABS control module -J104- (terminal 15) according to wiring diagram.

Test Step 3

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 3 (Part 1 Of 2):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 3 (Part 2 Of 2):

Test Of:
- ABS return flow pump relay -J105-
- ABS return flow pump N39-
- ABS return flow pump -V39- Ground (GND) connection

Test Step 4

NOTE: Test step 4 is not applicable for front-wheel-drive.

Test Step 5

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 5 (Part 1 Of 3):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 5 (Part 2 Of 3):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 5 (Part 3 Of 3):

Test Of:
- ABS solenoid valve relay -JI1106-
- Solenoid valve function, corresponding electrical/hydraulic functions (checking to see if they are transposed)

NOTE: Wheels are tested individually using wheel selector switch -4-.
^ Position 5 = left-front ABS inlet/outlet valve -N 137-
^ Position 6 = right-front ABS inlet/outlet valve -N 138-
^ Position 7 = left-front ABS inlet/outlet valve -N 139-
^ Position 8 = right-rear ABS inlet/outlet valve -N 140-

- Repeat for each wheel:
Set wheel selector switch -4- to position -6-; test right-front wheel starting with test step 5.3.

Set wheel selector switch -4- to position -7-; test left-rear wheel starting with test step 5.3.

Set wheel selector switch -4- to position -8-; test right-rear wheel starting with test step 5.3.

Test Step 6

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 6 (Part 1 Of 3):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 6 (Part 2 Of 3):

VAG 1710 ABS Tester, Test Step 6 (Part 3 Of 3):

Test Of:
- ABS wheel speed sensors

NOTE:
^ Read scale - I- only after LED -2- comes on without flickering.
^ The scale is divided into 8 steps.
^ When wheel speed is too high, LED -2- goes out.
^ Wheel speed sensors are tested individually using wheel selector.
Position 5 = left-front ABS wheel speed sensor -G47-
Position 6 = right-front ABS wheel speed sensor -G45-
Position 7 = left-rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G46-
Position 8 = right-rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G44-

- Repeat for remaining wheels:
Set wheel selector switch -4- in position -6-; test right-front wheel speed sensor -G45- starting with test step 6.3.
Set wheel selector switch -4- in position -7-; test left-rear wheel speed sensor -G46- starting with test step 6.3.
Set wheel selector switch -4- in position -8-; test right-rear wheel speed sensor -G44- starting with test step 6.3.

NOTE:
^ 2 seconds after the ignition is switched on, the ABS warning light -K47- must go out.
^ Drive at least 30 km/h (20 mph) for at least 20 seconds, during this time, ABS warning light -K47- must not light up again.
