Fluid Type Specifications

Fluid Amounts

Refrigerant R134a

NOTE:
- Always fill refrigerant circuit to the upper tolerance level (refrigerant in the middle of the fill hoses.)
- Refer to label in engine compartment for specifications regarding amount of fluid and type of refrigerant.

The fill amount for refrigerant R134a is dependent on the version of the following components:
- Condenser
- Service valve

Characteristics for refrigerant circuit
- Compressor manufacturer "Zexel" or "Denso"
- Service valve
- Accumulator

NOTE:
- Since November 1997 service valve production includes a revised service valve (colored). For vehicles with the revised service valve the fill amount is increased by 50 grams.
- To differentiate between both versions, the service valve with the smaller hole is colored (yellow).
- If a revised (colored) service valve is installed in a vehicle which had the previous valve, fill with 50 grams more refrigerant (See table).
- Replacement service valves with different holes are available. If a vehicle has a different service valve installed, fill with 50 grams more or less of refrigerant as necessary (See table on previous page). After filling, correct the fill amount on the label in engine compartment or information label with the new fill amount specifications.
- On the Audi A4 (depending on the motor and production time frame) different compressors are installed. At the start of production only compressors from manufacturer "Zexel" were installed. Beginning 1996 model year, vehicles with 6 cyl. engines have compressors manufactured by "Denso" which were phased into production.
- Beginning November 1998 on the Audi A4, condensers from manufacturer "AWG" were installed (approx. 10,000 vehicles beginning with vehicle number 8DXA 065 253 to 8DXA 077 026). For vehicles with these condensers a different fill amount is specified as with condensers by manufacturer "Showa." Condensers can be differentiated by specific characteristics.
- If the original condenser is replaced with a compressor with another part number, check the fluid amount specification on the label applied to the vehicle and if necessary correct or replace the current label with a label with correct fluid amount (glue over).

Differentiating characteristics between "Showa" and "AWG" condenser

- Different intake pipes
A - Intake pipes to condenser of manufacturer "Showa"
B - Intake pipes to condenser of manufacturer "AWG"

- Different connections to pressure switch
A - Connection area for condenser of manufacturer "Showa"
B - Connection area for condenser of manufacturer "AWG"
