EGR Temperature Sensor: Testing and Inspection

CHECKING PROCEDURE:
- Disconnect EGR temperature sensor harness connector.

- Switch multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to 20 volt range and connect between both terminals of connector using jumper wires from connector test kit VW 1594.
- Switch ignition ON.

Specified Value: approx. 5.0 volts.

If the specified value is not obtained:

- Find and eliminate open circuit in wiring between EGR temperature sensor connector terminal 1 and ECM terminal A23, and then between connector terminal 2 and engine Ground (GND), using wiring diagram.

NOTE: If it becomes necessary to repair or replace any of the EGR temperature sensor electrical terminals, ONLY replace with gold plated terminals.

If the specified value is obtained:
- Disconnect multimeter and jumper wires from EGR temperature sensor harness connector.
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Remove EGR temperature sensor.
- Switch multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to 200 Ohms resistance range and connect to EGR temperature sensor terminals using jumper wires from connector test kit 1594.
- Immerse temperature sensor in hot water (80° to 100°C) (176° to 212°F) and measure resistance.

Resistance must change.

If resistance does not change:
- Replace EGR temperature sensor.
