Exhaust System: Adjustments
Exhaust System, Aligning Free of StressNOTES:
^ Loosen all bolted connections to the exhaust system (except the exhaust manifolds) including the bracket for the front exhaust pipe at the transmission.
^ The dimensions specified are approximate dimensions.
^ The exhaust system must be cold when aligning.
^ The following steps must be carried out in the specified sequence.
- Tighten flange connection nuts for left and right side front exhaust pipes to exhaust manifolds by hand.
Tightening sequence, refer to Front Exhaust Pipes, Tightening Sequence. Service and Repair
- Make sure that dimensions -a- from three way catalytic converter -A- to chassis -B- are uniform.
- Dimension -a- (min.): 20 mm (25/32 inch)
- Dimension -b- (approx.): 30 mm (1-3/16 inch)
NOTE: The three way catalytic converter is shown from behind, facing toward the front of the vehicle.
- Dimension -a- between three way catalytic converter output pipe -A- and crossmember-B- must be approximately 50 mm (approximately 2 inch).
- Attach two halves of right-front exhaust pipe at flanges.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
- Tighten flange connection nuts for exhaust pipe to left-front exhaust manifold.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
- Tighten flange connection nuts for exhaust pipe to right-front exhaust manifold.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
- Align ends of tail pipes.
- Place center muffler outlet pipe -A- and rear muffler inlet pipe -B- into double clamp -C- up to stop (arrow).
NOTE: Arrow -D- points toward the front of the vehicle.
- Align bolted connection of double clamp (between center muffler and rear muffler) as shown.
- Tighten evenly.
Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
The heads of the bolts must face the fuel tank.
NOTE: The double clamp is shown from behind, facing the front of the vehicle.
- Push muffler and center muffler toward front until left retaining bottom rear muffler protrudes at least 18 mm (3/4 inch) from bracket (dimension -a-).
- Tighten bracket.
Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
- Make sure that opening -b- does not lie on block. Deformed or damaged brackets must be replaced.
- Align bolted connection of double clamp (between three way catalytic converter and center muffler).
Angle -a-: 30°
Dimension -b-: approximately 38-40 mm (1-1/2 inch)
- Tighten evenly.
Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
NOTE: The double clamp is shown from behind, facing the front of the vehicle.
- Tighten flange connection nuts for front exhaust pipe to three way catalytic converter.
- Tighten brackets for front exhaust pipe to three way catalytic converter.
NOTE: Mounting bolts must be tightened free of tension, perpendicular to the center line of the vehicle.
