Left Side Seal

Disconnect drive axle from drive flange, refer to Axle Shaft Assembly, Constant Velocity Type. Service and Repair

- Place oil drain pan under transmission.
- Remove drive flange with compression spring, support ring and cone ring.
- Remove drive flange seal using special tool VW681.





- Drive new drive flange oil seal in to stop.
Lubricate space between sealing lips with gear oil.





- Install drive flange with compression spring, support ring and cone ring.

NOTE:
^ The chamfer on the cone ring faces the differential gear.
^ The tabs (2 in illustration) on the drive gear (for vehicle speed sensor) must engage between the support ring tabs (1 in illustration).

- Install drive flange.
- Check final drive oil level, refer to Automatic Transaxle Differential Fluid. [1][2]Differential Fluid - A/T
- Tighten as follows:
- Drive flange, left to transmission: 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
- Drive axle to transmission:
8 mm bolt: 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
10 mm bolt: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
- Drive shaft to wheel hub (Always Replace)
14 mm nut: 115 Nm (140 ft lb) plus an additional 1/4-turn (90°)
16 mm nut: 190 Nm (140 ft lb) plus an additional 1/4-turn (90°)1)
