Connecting VAG 1551
VAS 5051 Tester Or VAG 1551 Scan Tool, Connecting And Selecting Functions
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover for diagnostic connector.
Vehicles up to model year 2001
- Connect VAS 5051 tester to vehicle with VAS5051/1 diagnostic wire.
Vehicles from model year 2002
- Connect vehicle diagnostic tester VAS 5051 to vehicle with VAS5051/1 diagnostic wire and VAS6017 adapter.
NOTE:
- On vehicles starting model year 2002 the OBD can only be carried out in conjunction with VAS 6017 adapter. On these vehicles the diagnostic wire to the A/C Control Head -E87 is connected to a different terminal on the diagnostic connector
- As an alternative use VAG 1551 scan tool, VAS5051 Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and In formation System or vehicle system tester VAG 1552 with diagnostic cable VAG 1551/3.
- If special testing equipment is required during road test, observe safety precautions.
- The following description mainly explains implementation of On Board Diagnostic using VAG1551 Scan tool.
- When using the VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and In formation System or Vehicle System Tester VAG 1552, observe instructions in the tester's user manual.

NOTE:
- If nothing appears on the display of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), check Data Link Connector (DLC) wiring.
- Depending on the program, additional operating information can be printed out by pressing the HELP button of the VAG1551 scan tool.
- The -> button is used for advancing through the program sequence.
- The PRINT button is used for switching on the printer (lamp in button lights up).
- DTC memory can only be erased after DTC memory has been checked.
- Switch ignition on or start engine.
- Switch compressor on (press "Auto" button on A/C Control Head -E87-).
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.
NOTE: To check the speed signal (in "Read measuring value block" function 08), move the vehicle a few meters at walking speed before starting the OBD program.

- Press buttons -0- and -8- (08 is the address word for the vehicle system to be tested, "A/C Heating Electronics").

After a short period of time the control module identification, the coding and the Workshop Code (WSC) of the VAG1551 are indicated:

Coding XXXXX WSC ZZZZZ
- Control module identification, depending on vehicle equipment, climate control version, production time of vehicle, and coding of -E87-,
Programming and Relearning
- WSC ZZZZZ = Work shop code number from the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), with which the last coding was performed.
- "DXX" or "XXXX" indicates software version of A/C Control Head -E87-, this is not important for service department.

- Wiring connection of diagnostic connector according to wiring diagram checking.

No signal from control module
- If this display appears at the beginning of or during the OBD program, malfunctions have occurred and data transfer is no longer possible between the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) and the A/C Control Head -E87-. Check wire connection of diagnostic connector according to wiring diagram.

Malfunction in communication set-up
- After repairing potential malfunction causes, re-enter address word 08 for "AC Heating Electronics" and press -Q- button to confirm.
