Wheel Bearing Housing, Removing and Installing, All Wheel Drive
Special Tools and Equipment
- VW401 thrust plate
- VW402 thrust plate
- VW416b pipe piece
- VW412 punch
- VW407 punch
- VW519 pipe piece
- 3- Kukko 15-17 extractor
- VAG1383 A transmission lifter
Removing
- Unscrew hex bolt for drive axle.
- Remove wheels.
- Vehicles having an outer joint diameter of 98 mm diameter need to have drive axle removed.
- Remove heat shield for drive axle (arrows).
- Unscrew drive axle from joint flange.
- Remove socket-head bolt -1-.
- Remove ABS wheel speed sensor -2- from wheel bearing housing.
- Loosen exhaust system in back, and secure to body
- Put in wheel carrier with VAG1383 A
- Pound drive axle out of wheel hub with plastic hammer, if necessary.
- Remove drive axle.
- Unscrew attachment screws -1- from brake caliper.
- Take off brake caliper and hang on body.
- Remove brake disc.-
- Unscrew spherical cap bolts -1- and -2-.
- Pull out wheel bearing unit - Take off backing plate.

- Insert separator into ring groove of bearing inner race (arrow), and pretension with spindle.
Note: Use a commercially available separator, e.g. Kukko 15-17.

- When pressing in, pressure piece -VW511- must rest only against bearing inner race.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal.
- Observe notes when installing drive axle
Tightening torques:
M14, drive axle to wheel hub 115 Nm +180°
Use new bolt!
M16, drive axle to wheel hub 190 Nm +180°
Use new bolt!
M8, drive axle to joint flange 40 Nm
M10, drive axle to joint flange 70 Nm
Bolts for heat shield 25 Nm
Brake caliper to wheel carrier 70 Nm + 90°
Wheel bearing unit to wheel carrier 80 Nm + 90°
