Needle bearing (polygon bearing) for right drive flange, replacing

Special tools and workshop equipment required





^ VW 401 Press plate
^ VW 402 Press plate
^ VW 407 Press tool
^ VW 412 Press tool
^ 3253/5 Assembly tool
^ T10047 Assembly tool





^ 3287 A Ball joint puller
^ VAG1669 or 6 mm socket attachment, at least 190 mm long (commercially available type)
^ Special tool T10037
^ Drip tray

Removing





- Unscrew nut on connecting link from right end of anti-roll bar.
- Remove upper nut on right suspension ball joint.





- Install ball joint splitter as shown in illustration and press out ball joint.

Notes: To protect the thread, leave the nut screwed a few turns on the ball joint thread.

- Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.





- Remove heat shield for right drive axle from bevel box.
- Unbolt right drive axle at transmission, move clear and tie up.





- Place drip tray under the engine.
- Unbolt the oil return pipe for the turbocharger from the sump and the cylinder block - arrows 2 and 3.
- Place drip tray under the transmission.
- Remove right hand drive flange bolt (arrow - 1 -) using VAG1669.





- Pull out drive flange for drive flange using special tool T10037.





Assemble assembly tool T10047 now as follows:
- Apply the two parts of the assembly tool so that markings "B" are aligned.
- The stepped shoulders (arrows) must then be below the bearing.
- Now bolt both halves together onto stop.





- Lever off securing ring - A - for bearing.
- Turn shaft (arrow) during the pressing sequence so that the running surface of the bearing on the shaft is not damaged.

Installing





- Apply assembly tool T10047 Fig. A39 0298.
- Turn shaft (arrow) during the pressing sequence so that the running surface of the bearing on the shaft is not damaged. - Secure bearing with a new securing ring.

- Knock in drive flange for drive flange, turning it at the same time.
- Secure drive flange for drive flange with cone head bolt.
- Fit new seal on turbocharger oil return pipe and install.
- Bolt on drive axle.
- Check oil in manual transmission with bevel box.
- Fill up with engine oil.
