Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair



Return Spring With Slip Ring, Removing And Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required







- Torx screwdriver T8 T 40056







- Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A

Removing:
- Drivers side airbag unit (standard steering wheel), removing.
- Drivers side airbag unit (sport steering wheel), removing.
- Drivers side airbag unit (multi-function steering wheel), removing.
- Steering wheel, standard, removing.
- Steering wheel, sport, removing.
- Steering wheel, multi-function, removing.
- Pull steering column all the way out and down.







- Remove Torx bolts - 3 - and - 5 - with Torx Screwdriver T 40056 as well as hex socket head bolt - 4 -.
Tightening torque: 1 Nm
- Disconnect upper steering column switch trim - 2 - from lower trim - 1 - and remove both parts.







- Disconnect connector - 1 -.
- Carefully release catch - arrows -and pull return spring with slip ring from steering column switches.

Installing:
Installation is reverse of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Ensure all catches and the connection engage cleanly.
- When installing, guide upper trim into lower trim hooks, press both parts together and bolt.

NOTE:
- heels must be in straight-ahead position when removing or installing return spring with slip ring.
- Return spring with slip ring is secured as a new part in center position with a cable tie or shear ring.
- On vehicles with ESP sensor in return spring with slip ring, ESP sensor must be adapted.
