Removing And Installing Backrest Cover And Padding For 2/3 Backrest Section







1 - Backrest cushion

Removing
- Remove backrest.
- Remove bolts - 12 - (2x) from lock trim - 16 -.
- Remove headrest - 17 - by pressing catch on left headrest guide - 18 -.
- Remove center armrest - 6 - Fig. 2.
- Remove ski bag - 7 -.
- Remove headrest guide - 18 - Fig. 1.
- Remove bearing shell ,Fig. 3.
- Pry fastening strip - 8 - out of seatback panel - 2 -.







- Detach hooks - 4 - from retaining bracket - 3 -.
- Unhook hook - 9 - from retaining bracket at headrest cut-out.
- Cut through upholstery clips - 11 - and remove seat cover.
- Remove backrest heating element - 10 -.

Installing
- Use VAG 1634 stapling tool to install new upholstery clips.

6 - Center armrest
7 - Ski bag
- If installing a new seat cover, cut out opening for ski bag.
8 - Rear fastening strip (all around)
9 - Hook at headrest
10 - Backrest heating element
11 - Upholstery clips
12 - Bolts
13 - Locking lever
- Remove bolts - 12 - (2x) from lock trim - 16 -.
- Detach locking lever from underneath at engaging hooks (2x).
- Use screwdriver to pry out locking lever at top.







14 - Lock cylinder
- Removing and installing lock cylinder involves use of ignition key.
- Remove locking lever.
- Use screwdriver to pry out retaining tabs and at the same time press out lock cylinder.

15 - Warning indicator
- When backrest is locked in position, pin protrudes 1-2 mm above lock trim.
- When backrest is not locked, pin protrudes approx. 20 mm above lock trim and red mark is visible.







16 - Lock trim
17 - Headrest
The outer rear head restraints are not identical to the front head restraints. Mark accordingly with adhesive tape if all head restraints are removed together.
18 - Head restraint guide
The button should always face toward the left.
- Always install guide piece with button on the left side.

For greater clarity, head restraint guide - 1 - is shown removed.

- Insert upholstery needle or screwdriver - 3 - with maximum width of 2 mm into hole - 4 - (opposite retaining clip for head restraint guide).
- Pry screwdriver - 3 - in direction of -arrow A-, press retainer tab - 2 - in direction of -arrow B- and pull out head restraint guide - 1 -.

- Pull cover - 5 - off in direction of arrow.
- Remove bolt - 2 -.
- Loosen bolt - 3 - from hinge arm - 4 -.
- Remove center armrest - 1 -.

- Pry off bearing sleeve - 1 - in direction of arrow using a flathead screwdriver.
