Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299, checking


NOTE: The secondary air pump relay is located in the E-box in the plenum chamber.


- Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS5051 or VAG 1551 Scan Tool and select engine electronics control module by entering address word "01". When doing this the ignition must be switched on.
- Start output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) and activate secondary air pump relay, Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)

Second. Air Injection Pump Relay -J299



Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299 activates Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101, which runs at intervals until the DTM is terminated by pressing the button.

If Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101 does not run at intervals:
- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector off secondary air pump motor and connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp to disconnected connector using test leads from VAG 1594 connector test kit.
- Repeat output DTM.

If the diode test lamp now blinks during output DTM:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101.

If diode test lamp does not blink and secondary air injection pump relay does not click, test activation of secondary air pump relay.

If diode test lamp does not flash but secondary air pump relay clicks, test voltage supply for secondary air injection pump relay.

Checking voltage supply for secondary air pump relay

- Check fuse for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299.

If the fuse is not faulty:


NOTE: The secondary air pump relay is located in the E-box in the plenum chamber.


- Remove secondary air pump relay from relay carrier.

- Test voltage supply (B+30) for relay.

If no malfunctions are identified in the voltage supply for the relay.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299.

Check activation of secondary air injection pump relay

- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to wiring harness for engine control module. DO NOT connect to engine control module itself, Connecting VAG 1598/31 Test Box

NOTE: The secondary air injection pump relay is located in the E-box in the plenum chamber.


- Remove secondary air injection pump relay from relay carrier.
- Check for open circuit in following wiring connection:

Secondary air pump relay, Socket on
contact VAG 1598/31

- 46

Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5 ohm

If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220.
- Display readiness code, Readiness Code Reading. Readiness code must be generated if DTC memory was erased, Readiness Code, Generating
