Fig. 1 Location of Automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217:

The TCM is located in front of the right seat under the carpet in the foot well.

Removing

Fig. 2 TCM -J217, removing and Installing:

^ Remove trim of right -A- column at bottom and right door entry moulding of right front door.
^ Loosen and fold up carpet at right rocker panel at right front door about 20 cm (8 inch).
^ Unclip container at -A- upward.
^ Unclip container at -B- as shown.

^ Unclip control module from container -arrows-
^ Disengage mufti-pin connector and disconnect from control module; Refer to Fig. 3.

Installing: Install in reverse order of removal but note the following:

^ Clip nut -1- must be securely fastened.

Fig. 3 Automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217, disconnecting multi-pin connector:

^ Switch off ignition and wait for about 30 seconds.
^ To disengage connector, push clip in direction of arrow.
Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Fig. 4 Engine Control Module (ECM):

Location: in plenum chamber in E-box.

Note: Before replacing the ECM, first read measuring value block 013 and print out or make note of values

Fig. 5 Data Link Connector (DLC):

Location: located under knee bar left of steering wheel.
^ Connect VAG 1551 scan tool and insert address word "02 Transmission electronics".

Fig. 6 Transmission Internal wiring harness with Integrated Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93:

Location: Harness is attached to valve body.
The harness can be replaced with transmission installed.
Transmission Internal wiring harness, removing and Installing
Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93
Location: Sensor is firmly integrated in wiring harness and can only be replaced by replacing harness.

Fig. 7 ABS Control Module -J104:

Location: In engine compartment on left side. It is attached to the hydraulic control unit.

Location: In shift mechanism -arrow-.

Fig. 14 Tiptronic Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F189:

Location: Integrated in printed circuit for the Transmission Range (TR) Selector Lever Display
The switch consists of 3 position sensors (-A-, -B-, -C-) that are triggered by a magnet located on the Transmission Range (TR) Selector Lever Display
A - Sensor for downshift
B - Sensor for Tiptronic recognition
C - Sensor for upshift
^ Can be tested in "Reading measuring value block".

In case of malfunctions, first check whether solenoid is properly attached to slide -C-, replace slide if necessary. Only replace selector lever display and integrated printed circuit after checking all wiring and connections. For vehicles with Tiptronic steering wheel also check buttons on steering wheel.
