Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Readiness Code, Function

Readiness code

The readiness code appears as an 8-digit display on measured value block 086, display zone 1. Each of the 8 digits is allocated to a particular emission-related system.

If the function of these systems is checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD) through a test which has to be run fully, the position in the 8-digit display is set from "1" to "0". This happens regardless whether the test is performed with "OK" or with "not OK". This is under the condition that the test has been fully completed.

If a test is performed fully but with "not OK" a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored in the DTC memory. Checking DTC memory. If the readiness code is produced after the test has been run successfully it is also called "0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0" (measured value block 086, display zone 1).

The readiness code is reset to "1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1" if:

- DTC memory has been erased,
- A new engine control module is installed.
