Wheel Bearing Housing (Steel)
Hub carrier/wheel bearing housing (steel), removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
^ Grease cap puller VW 637/2
^ Fitting sleeve 3241/4
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1410
^ Socket T40027
Removing
- Remove wheel trim; pull trim cap off light-alloy wheels, (using puller in vehicle tool kit).
Front wheel drive vehicles
Note:
^ If you do not intend to replace wheel bearing unit, do not remove collared nut and dust cap.
- Remove wheel.
- Tap gently to detach dust cap from its seat.
- Pry off dust cap.
- Install wheel and lower vehicle onto its wheels.
Continued for all vehicles
- Loosen collared bolt - arrow - only 90°, otherwise wheel bearing will be damaged.
CAUTION: The vehicle must be standing on its wheels when loosening and tightening the collared bolt. - Risk of Accident -
- Remove wheel.
- Secure brake disc with one wheel bolt.
- Remove brake caliper - arrows -. Use socket T40027.
Note:
^ Secure brake caliper to body with wire.
^ Do not suspend the brake caliper from the brake hose.
- Remove brake disc.
- Remove coil spring
- Remove collared bolt - 1 -
- Remove splash plate - 3 -
Front wheel drive vehicles
- Remove wheel bearing unit - 2 -
Note:
^ If the wheel bearing unit can be pulled off the hub carrier by hand, it is OK and does not have to be replaced.
Continued for all vehicles
- Remove speed sensor - 2 -.
- Using a felt-tip pen or similar, mark position of eccentric bolt - 1 - on top of hub carrier/wheel bearing housing.
- Remove the illustrated bolt connections in the following sequence: item 5, item 3, item 4, item 1.
- Remove hub carrier or wheel bearing housing.
Note:
^ On vehicles with all wheel drive, carefully press off drive. axle.
Installing
Note:
^ Replace bolts and self-locking nuts [] instructions in exploded views.
Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. The mountings of the suspension links must only be tightened when the suspension is in curb weight position.
Front wheel drive vehicles
- Install new wheel bearing unit if necessary.
Continued for all vehicles
- Tighten bolt connections - 1 - , - 3 -, - 4 - and - 5 - .
- Fasten wheel speed sensor - 2 - (front wheel drive) or (all wheel drive).
- Bolt splash plate and brake caliper onto hub carrier or wheel bearing housing.
All wheel drive vehicles
- Install 5 wheel bolts hand-tight and apply parking brake firmly.
Continued for all vehicles
- Tighten collared bolt - 1 - initially to specified torque, without turning further (turn bolt through specified angle at a later time when vehicle is standing on its wheels) (front wheel drive) or (all wheel drive).
- Install coil spring.
- Install wheel and tighten
Tightening torques:
- Tighten collared bolt - 1 - , Fig. A42-0250 by turning through specified angle, (front-wheel drive) or (four-wheel drive).
Vehicles with front-wheel drive
- Remove wheel.
- Drive in new grease cap.
- Install wheel and fasten.
Note:
^ Always replace damaged (dented) dust caps.
^ Damaged (dented) dust caps may allow moisture to enter the bearing. For this reason it is important to use the tool shown in the illustration.

- Check wheel alignment.
Wheel alignment must be performed on wheel alignment equipment recommended by Audi.
