Hub Carrier



Part IV: Hub carrier, front-wheel drive





1 - Hub carrier
^ Vehicles with front-wheel drive
^ Removing and installing
^ Servicing

2 - Wheel bearing unit
^ Removing and installing
^ Wheel bearing and wheel hub are combined in one housing.
^ This wheel bearing/hub unit is maintenance-free and has zero play. There is no provision for adjustment or repair.
^ Does not always have to be replaced
^ Wheel bearing unit is OK and does not have to be replaced if it can be pulled off hub carrier by hand.
^ Wheel bearing unit must be replaced if it cannot be pulled off by hand
^ Replace only as a complete assembly

3 - Collared bolt
^ Always replace
^ Tighten to 200 Nm plus an additional 180° 1/2 turn
^ Tighten to 200 Nm while vehicle is raised; turn through specified angle only when vehicle is standing on its wheels
^ Do not loosen more than 90° when vehicle is standing on its wheels

4 - Dust cap
^ Always replace if removed
^ Proper sealing can only be achieved by installing a new dust cap.
^ This is essential for optimum function and service life.

5 - Speed sensor
^ Routing of wiring

6 - Hex socket head bolt, 10 Nm
7 - Self-locking nut
^ Always replace

8 - Washer
9 - Shock absorber
^ Removing and installing
^ Note installation position
^ Note different suspension versions; see vehicle data sticker
^ Faulty shock absorbers must always be degassed and drained before disposal
^ Checking shock absorber following removal

10 - Combi bolt, 36 Nm
11 - Combi bolt
^ Always replace
^ Tighten to 150 Nm plus an additional 90° 1/4 turn
^ Suspension must be in curb weight position when tightening bolt connections





Routing of speed sensor wiring on trapezoidal link
1 -Bolt with cylindrical shoulder, 10 Nm
2 - Collared bolt, 10 Nm
3 - Cable guide
- To remove, unscrew collared bolt - 2 - and carefully detach cable guide at bolts - 1 - - arrows A -.
- To remove complete cable, unclip from subframe - arrow B -.





Installation position of shock absorber
The longer collar - arrow A - on shock absorber must be seated centering on hub carrier/wheel bearing housing - arrow B -.
